What is Awana?

Awana is a fun place for children to learn to know, love, and serve God! At First Baptist Church, we want to partner with parents to help develop spiritually strong children. The weekly meetings are divided into three rotations:

  • Game Time – With team games that stress healthy competition and good sportsmanship.

  • Large Group Time – Which includes singing, skits, and teaching of God’s Word.

  • Small Group Time – Where children work with their leaders to memorize God’s Word, understand the meaning of it, and know how it affects their behavior.

Our Awana has three age-appropriate clubs (see below) that teach kids that God is real, that He loves us very much and sent His Son, Jesus Christ. We talk about how God helps us in our daily lives and hears our prayers. We learn that God’s Word is relevant to everyday life and that hiding God’s Word in our hearts is powerful.

Cubbies is for children who would be starting kindergarten in two years (3 and 4 year olds) who are potty trained.  With the help of the mascot “Cubbie Bear,” children develop respect for God, His Son and His Word.

Throughout the year, Cubbies will enjoy games, awards for memorizing short Bible verses from their handbook, crafts, stories, and other activities. At Story Time each week, preschoolers learn about God – the greatness of His love and His Word – and about His Son, Jesus Christ, the promised Savior.  Using the handbook, it is easy for parents to work on the short weekly lesson, to help them in the spiritual nurturing of their precious child.

 

Sparks club combines learning with fun to help students learn basic truths about God, Jesus Christ, and the Bible.  Sparks enjoy an exciting game time, Bible story time, and handbook time. “Sparky,” the friendly firefly, encourages boys and girls to learn verses and complete handbook assignments.  With the help of their parents and their handbook CD, Sparks clubbers work their way through their handbook activities and memory work to learn about the people and events of the Bible, building a foundation of wisdom for knowing Christ.

There are three levels of handbooks in Sparks. They are:

  • HangGlider® – For 1st year Sparks

  • WingRunner® – For those who have completed the HangGlider handbook

  • SkyStormer™ – For those who have completed the WingRunner handbook

Truth and Training (T&T) engages tweens by answering their questions about God and the Bible, guiding them through this pivotal life stage to grow in Christ’s grace. Games, Music, Awards, Theme Nights, Prizes and Large Group Time make T&T a fun place to learn about the Bible and memorize its precious and practical words. Today, 10- to 12-year-olds face unique pressures, demands and distractions. These factors can result in a marked increase in discouragement, apathy and disengagement.  T&T seeks to focus the attention of leaders on the unique challenges and needs of this age group.

T&T is divided into two parts: Ultimate Adventure (3rd and 4th graders) and Ultimate Challenge (5th and 6th graders).  At this age, clubbers are beginning to be able to work on their own, but that doesn’t mean parents are no longer involved. Third through sixth graders are still learning to pace themselves and need your encouragement to do well.
